The 3 O’s of Eyecare

When it comes to eyecare most of us are familiar with the title optometrist, but you’ve probably also heard the titles ophthalmologist and optician used as well. Although they all start with the same letter, each of these groups of professionals is able to manage different aspects of your eyecare needs. So what exactly do they all do?

An optometrist is a primary eyecare provider who is able to perform comprehensive eye exams, as well as manage most ongoing eyecare needs. A good analogy for optometrists is as the general practitioners of eyecare. Optometrists are doctors who are able to prescribe glasses, contact lenses, and medications to manage eye conditions, and they can provide pre- and post-operative care to patients. Optometrists work closely with other healthcare providers to manage and monitor for systemic health conditions in the eyes, and will refer patients requiring more specialized care on to an ophthalmologist.

Ophthalmologists are physicians specialized in eye disease and surgery, and can be thought of as eye specialists. Like optometrists they can also prescribe glasses and contact lenses, though many prefer to practice with a more medical focus. Optometrists refer patients that need more specialized eyecare or those patients that require surgery to ophthalmologists, and the two professions often work closely to co-manage patients.

When it comes to fitting, adjusting, and measuring glasses opticians are the experts. Opticians ensure patients are looking and seeing their best in their glasses. Some opticians are also able to fit contact lenses. Opticians work closely with both optometrists and ophthalmologists to optimize patient vision.

Each of the three professions plays a slightly different role in providing eyecare, but together the three O’s of eyecare work symbiotically to support patients’ eye health and sight.  If you’re in doubt as to who you need to see, a good place to start is with your optometrist, they can direct you to the right professional.
